Here’s why Publix Rice & Pigeon Peas have been recalled from Florida stores

Publix Rice & Pigeon Peas have been recalled from the chain’s Florida stores for a potential food allergy issue, the second such recall in a week.

A.S.K. Foods issued the recall, which Publix posted to its website on Wednesday, because the 32-ounce plastic containers have the bottom label and ingredients listing for Three Cheese Mac & Cheese. Because the pasta dish doesn’t have soy like the rice and peas, soy isn’t listed among the ingredients.

No problem for most people, but a potentially serious problem for those with a soy allergy, as the recall notice states: “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.”

Publix coffee cake was recalled earlier this week for a similar packaging mistake and food allergy risk.

The rice and peas recall covers lot Nos. 5387-4, 5387-5, and 5387-6. If there’s a chance anyone with a soy allergy will eat the rice and peas, return it to Publix for a refund.

If you have questions about this recall, ask A.S.K. at 717-838-6356, ext. 132, Monday through Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern time.
