Here’s what Manatee voters need to know for Election Day: Local races, candidates and more
Tuesday’s off-year election gives Manatee County voters an opportunity to weigh in on the school district’s budget and elect leaders on Anna Maria Island.
The school district’s special election asks residents to consider extending a higher tax rate that was previously approved by 51% of the vote during a special election in 2018.
In recent years, money raised from this 1-mill tax has gone toward higher pay for teachers and support staff, along with enabling the district to have an extended school day and the expansion of educational programs. If approved, the tax rate would remain the same as it has been since 2018.
Critics say the school district shouldn’t link competitive pay to a referendum vote on a special election, but proponents have argued that it’s the best way to support strong schools and educational programs.
Every registered Manatee County voter is eligible to vote on the school district referendum.
What is the Manatee Schools ballot question?
Ad Valorem Millage Election Shall the School Board of Manatee County continue the current one (1) mill ad valorem millage from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2025, as overseen by the Citizens’ Financial Oversight Committee, to increase student achievement through more instructional time and support; recruit and retain teachers and staff with competitive salaries; expand Career and Technical Education, STEM and Visual/Performing Arts programs; and to distribute proportional funds to Charter Schools pursuant to Florida Statute 1011.71?
