What is Patriot Park? Something new is starting in Palmetto on July 4
On July 4, City of Palmetto leaders will break ground on a new park that will be a “lasting tribute” to the nation’s 250th anniversary, the city announced.
Patriot Park, located on the corner of 14th Avenue West and 10th Street West, will feature eight pickleball courts, a basketball court, a playground, a covered pavilion, a multi-use field and a 0.7-mile walking trail.
“It’s going to be a very well-used park in the middle of Palmetto,” Mayor Dan West said. “I think that the folks in Palmetto are going to benefit greatly from it.”
The existing tennis courts at the site will be rebuilt into new pickleball courts and new tennis courts will be built on the south side. Also on the south side will be the new basketball court, pavilion and playground, with the walking trail throughout the park.
“People are so excited about it, especially the pickleball players,” West said. “Every day, people tell me how excited they are about it. People love the concept about the walkway around the perimeter.”
New park coming to Palmetto
Aside from the existing courts, the lot is mainly open space now. West said Patriot Park’s design maintains an open, grassy space on one side for recreation.
Construction on the $5 million park is expected to take about one year after it starts in July, according to West, opening in mid-2027. Parking will be included around the perimeter of the park.
“I hope people get out there and exercise and utilize it,” West said. “It’s really adding something (to the community).”
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on July 4 at 9 a.m., and will include West, city commissioners and other community leaders, according to a post on the city’s Facebook.
“Join us as we celebrate our nation’s history, honor those who came before us, and mark the beginning of a new community gathering place for future generations,” the post says.
