U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan says Roy Moore should step aside amid the mounting sexual assault allegations levied against the Republican Senate candidate.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released a statement on Tuesday asking why Buchanan hadn’t yet denounced Moore and his candidacy when several high-profile Republicans, including Sens. Susan Collins and John McCain already had.

“The despicable allegations that Roy Moore molested girls as young as 14 years old have been public for days now, and the silence of Rep. Vern Buchanan is stunning,” said DCCC spokesman Cole Leiter. “At the very least, people deserve to know if Buchanan believes Roy Moore is fit to serve in the United States Senate as a fellow elected official of the Republican party.”

Following the release, Buchanan posted a statement on his Twitter account Tuesday afternoon, calling the allegations against Moore “extremely disturbing” and wrote that “he should do the right thing and step down immediately.”
