Cruise ship passengers among those injured in Mexico bus crash
Twenty-seven out of 31 passengers on a bus that crashed in Mexico on Tuesday – killing 12 and injuring 19 – were Royal Caribbean cruise ship passengers, the Miami-based cruise line announced.
The Turismo Costa Maya tour bus crashed in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, on Tuesday as it was heading to the Mayan ruin archaeological site Chacchoben, about 110 miles south of the popular tourist destination of Tulum, according to a report by CNN. Twelve people are dead and 19 were injured in the crash, according to reports.
Seven Americans and two Swedish citizens are among the injured, according to Quintana Roo authorities. The nationalities of the dead have not been released.
The ship docked Tuesday at Costa Maya and was scheduled to leave later in the day, the cruise line told the network. The injured were transferred to local hospitals.
Royal Caribbean said on Twitter the guests on the bus came from its Celebrity Equinox and Serenade of the Seas ships.
The news from Costa Maya about a bus accident involving #CelebrityEquinox & #SerenadeoftheSeas guests is heartbreaking. Our hearts go out to all those involved. We are doing all we can to care for our guests, including assisting with medical care and transportation.
