Family dogs that mauled newborn Fresno girl euthanized

Two family dogs who fatally mauled a 3-day-old girl earlier this week were euthanized Wednesday, the Central California Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said.

Authorities said the girl’s mother thought the dogs, believed to be shar-pei/pit bull mixes, were chained in the backyard of a central Fresno home when the attack occurred Monday, police said. The girl died at Community Regional Medical Center soon after the attack.

The 33-year-old mother, who has not been identified, said she left the child on a couch and “walked away for a few seconds,” Fresno police said.

The dogs, both males, were surrendered to the shelter by the owner, who is an uncle of the victim. He has not been identified.

The Central California SPCA said they did not consider placing the dogs in another home.
