A 12-year-old girl escaped a Texas home after months of physical and sexual abuse, leading to the arrests of two sisters, officials say.

The abuse came to light when deputies spoke with the girl on Sept. 28, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said in an Oct. 6 news release.

“The child was taken to a local hospital, where medical staff confirmed injuries consistent with abuse and malnutrition,” the sheriff’s office said.

Her body was covered in injuries and she had a large gash on her head, which was infected, KTRK reported, citing court documents.

Sisters Brenda Garcia, 38, and Tania Garcia, 37, were arrested Oct. 3 on charges including injury to a child, unlawful restraint and invasive visual recording, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to investigators, the girl’s mother was living in another country, so she stayed with her uncle, whom she accused of sexually assaulting her, KTRK reported. The girl turned to Brenda Garcia for help, and Garcia took the girl to live with her at her home in Conroe in March, officials said.

Investigators say the girl knew Garcia because Garcia’s daughter knew the uncle, the outlet reported.

After moving in with Garcia, the girl said she endured months of abuse and degradation, being beaten with sticks, forced to take nude photographs, fed only ramen noodles and water twice a day, and at times being zip-tied to a chair, officials said, KHOU reported.

The abuse only ended when the girl escaped from the home, KTRK reported.

When questioned, the sisters told authorities that the girl hurt herself and was “psychotic,” according to KHOU.

However, investigators said video captured by security cameras inside the house and cell phone video support the girl’s claims, the station reported.

“The safety and well-being of children will always be my highest priority,” Sheriff Wesley Doolittle said in the release. “This case is deeply disturbing, but it also highlights the importance of community awareness and the courage it takes to speak up. Together, we can protect the most vulnerable among us and ensure that justice is served.”

Conroe is a roughly 40-mile drive north from downtown Houston.
