A child attacked a classmate with a knife their mom had snuck into school, Michigan officials say.

The accused student and their mother have both been arrested following the Oct. 8 incident at Gompers Elementary-Middle School in Detroit, school officials said in a statement to parents that was shared on Facebook.

The school said the mother brought the knife into the school and was not searched, despite a metal detector sounding upon her entry.

The woman, who school officials did not name, gave the small knife to her child, who is then accused of stabbing a classmate, according to the school’s message.

The victim’s mother said in a social media post that her daughter “was stabbed in the head, back and arm, and was cut from neck to ear,” WDIV reported.

According to Detroit police, the stabbing happened over a “disagreement” involving the 14-year-old girl and the victim, WJBK reported.

Both students are in eighth grade, according to WXYZ.

The victim was hospitalized and listed in stable condition, school officials said.

Charges have not been announced against the mother and her child.

School officials said the security guard who let the mother enter the building was “removed from the school pending an investigation that could lead to termination.”

“School will be canceled tomorrow (Oct. 9) to ensure safety protocols are in place at the school,” administrators said. “We will also call a family teams meeting tomorrow evening to address this matter.”
