A North Carolina man just won his second lottery jackpot and it came by playing a game known to have some of the best odds.

Bobby White of Asheville won $1 million with a $30 scratch-off in the Max-A-Million game, the N.C. Education Lottery said in a news release.

Max-A-Million has overall odds of 1 in 2.95, which makes it one of the smartest scratch-off games to play, according to Lottoedge.com.

The worst odds? That’s $80 million Cash Blowout, which offers a 1-in-9.95 overall chance of winning, the site reports.

White won an even bigger jackpot – $2 million – in 2021 while playing Premier Cash, officials said. That game ended in 2023, so White didn’t have the option of continuing to play.

He showed up at lottery headquarters Wednesday, Aug. 27, to claim his latest prize, and was given a choice of a lesser lump-sum check or annual payments of $50,000 spread out over 20 years.

“He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $430,503,” officials said.

White bought his Max-A-Millions ticket at the Red Dot on N.C. 213 in Mars Hill, about a 145-mile drive northwest from Charlotte.

Lottery officials didn’t share details of how he intends to spend his money.
