Bear’s ‘escalating’ bad behavior shuts down New Hampshire campground
A campsite in New Hampshire was closed due to a black bear causing trouble.
The Franconia Brook Tentsite in the New Hampshire White Mountains National Forest was closed because of a “food-habituated black bear,” according to a Facebook post by the U.S. Forest Service — White Mountain National Forest.
The campsite was shut down until the bear’s “escalating behavior” would no longer pose a safety risk for campers, the post said.
The bear damaged several tents and an up-screen enclosure, site officials said.
Campers are encouraged to practice bear safety by properly storing and disposing of food.
“Keep a clean campsite to ensure bears and other animals don’t forage for your food. Put coolers and food containers in your vehicle when you finish your meal. Place trash in the bear proof dumpsters,” the post said.
Food that isn’t properly stored can attract bears and also poses the risk of the bear returning in the future to find food.
Anyone who doesn’t properly store food can receive a citation, officials said.
