Man is fatally shot by ex-wife’s new boyfriend while kids are home, NM cops say
A man is accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend’s ex-husband during a fight in New Mexico, police said.
Eduardo Castaneda, 35, is facing charges off first-degree murder, aggravated battery and abuse of a child in connection with the incident, New Mexico State Police said in a July 18 post on Facebook.
McClatchy News reached out to his attorney July 21 and was awaiting a response.
The shooting happened July 16 outside the girlfriend’s home in Ranchos De Taos, police said.
She brought her ex-husband, 45-year-old Antonio Gomez, over to the home to work on her car, police said.
Castaneda tried to get in touch with her and went to her home when he didn’t hear back, according to police.
When Castaneda arrived, he and Gomez had “an altercation,” police said, and “at some point during the altercation, Castaneda brandished a firearm and began firing at Gomez, striking Gomez and the female at least once.”
Gomez died at the scene and the woman was taken to a hospital, police said. She appeared to have been shot in the arm.
The children of Gomez and his ex-wife were home when the shooting happened, police said.
Castaneda fled but was found that evening after a manhunt, according to police.
Ranchos De Taos is about a 130-mile drive northeast from Albuquerque.
