Couple found clinging to trees as car is swept away in flood, Texas officials say

A man and woman were rescued after their vehicle was swept away in Texas floodwaters, officials say.

In a July 14 news release, Texas Game Wardens said the couple was in their car July 13 when the vehicle was forced through floodwaters in Lampasas County.

Their vehicle went through a culvert beneath railroad tracks, and it became submerged as it traveled nearly a mile downstream, rescuers said.

The man was found clinging to a tree about 15 feet above water, and the woman was located about 50 to 100 yards farther, also on a tree, according to the game wardens, who rescued the couple with help from other first responders.

“We are grateful to have reached them in time—and thankful for a relatively happy ending amidst the sadness and devastation Texas has experienced lately,” game wardens said.

Lampasas County was hit with catastrophic flooding due to heavy rain, which rose the Lampasas River to 33 feet — well above its normal level of 10 feet, according to KHOU.

“I have lived here for 40 years and I have never seen anything this bad…not ever,” Lampasas resident Georgia Coffman told KXXV.

The flooding, which follows the flooding in early July in Texas Hill Country, particularly in Kerr County, has also affected neighboring San Saba County.

“Some people’s lost everything here, and that just doesn’t happen in our little town,” Lampasas resident Ginnefer Gass told WFAA.

Lampasas County is about a 155-mile drive southwest from Dallas.
