A woman sat in complete shock as she laid eyes on the Michigan lottery ticket she had just scratched.

Earlier that day, the 79-year-old from Macomb County walked past a worker at Kroger restocking a kiosk with lottery tickets, according to a July 14 news release from Michigan lottery officials.

She circled back and purchased five $10 Smokin’ Hot Million tickets. She took her tickets home and scratched off a $1 million prize, officials said.

As the lottery player started to believe her big win, her husband was initially skeptical.

“When he asked how big, I told him: ‘I think I just won $1 million,’” she told lottery officials. “He didn’t believe me until he looked the ticket over himself.”

The couple invited their children over and shared the good news.

“Winning is exciting, overwhelming, and everything in between!” the winner said.

The woman chose to claim her prize in a lump sum of $693,000, lottery officials said. She plans to share the money with her children, go on a cruise and “pay it forward,” according to the news release.

Macomb County is about a 35-mile drive northeast from Detroit.
