Toddler dies with broken ribs in 2013, OR officials say. Dad sentenced in retrial
A dad has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being accused in the 2013 killing of his 15-month-old daughter, Oregon officials said.
In December 2013, Darian McWoods’ daughter, Kamaya Flores, died and the autopsy revealed her cause of death was methadone toxicity, according to a June 11 news release by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
McWoods’ attorney did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment on June 12.
The autopsy also showed the child has broken ribs, a laceration on her liver and bruising on her face, prosecutors said.
In 2016, McWoods was charged with murder by abuse, manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, criminal mistreatment and tampering with a witness, prosecutors said.
Then, in 2018, an expert witness testified in the trial that the toddler’s injuries were “consistent with inflicted child abuse and compression asphyxia,” prosecutors said.
He was convicted on all charges in 2018 but the convictions were later reversed and the case was sent back to the Multnomah County Circuit Court for a retrial, prosecutors said.
In May, McWoods pleaded guilty to manslaughter and criminal mistreatment, telling the court that “he recklessly, by neglect or maltreatment, caused the death” of his daughter, prosecutors said.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Amanda Nadell said, according to the release, that “Kamaya brought so much light and love to her family.”
“I am grateful that Mr. McWoods took accountability for his role in Kamaya’s death, by pleading guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree and Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree. I hope that the finality of this resolution will provide closure to the victim’s family,” Nadell said.
Multnomah County is in northwestern Oregon and is home to Portland.
