One person is dead and another is injured after police say they were hit by a train in New Hampshire.

Officers responded to train tracks in a wooded area just before 3:30 p.m. June 2, according to a news release from the Exeter Police Department.

According to authorities, 42-year-old Alicia Leonardi and a friend were walking a dog along the train tracks when an Amtrak train began to approach.

The dog, attracted by the sound of the train, ran onto the tracks, police said.

Leonardi and the man tried to get the dog off the tracks, but they were hit by the train, according to police.

Leonardi died, and the man had minor injuries, police said. Officers told WCSH that the dog survived.

Exeter is about a 30-mile drive east from Manchester.
