Car dealer shaves off thousands of miles on vehicle odometers in Ohio, feds say
An Ohio car dealer is accused of adjusting the mileage on vehicle odometers he sold, law officials said.
The 38-year-old man is charged with eight counts of tampering with motor vehicle odometers, according to court records.
Between November 2020 and May 2022, the man, who owned S. Automotive Ltd., “disconnected, reset and altered” the mileage on vehicle odometers, an April 24 news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio said.
An April 28 Google search says S. Automotive Ltd is “permanently closed.”
The dealer is accused of lowering the mileage displayed on the odometer to make it seem as if the vehicle had less mileage on it than it actually did. He then sold the vehicles at his dealership in the Columbus suburb of Whitehall, prosecutors said.
Officials said he changed the mileage on eight vehicles by lowering the odometers by 80,000 to 100,000 each.
On a 2007 Toyota Camry, he changed the mileage from 188,000 miles to 85,000 miles, court records said. On a 2007 Honda Accord, he changed it from 294,747 miles to 105,558, an indictment said.
Prosecutors say odometer fraud is punishable by up to three years in prison.
