A 19-year-old weeks away from his senior prom was killed when a gunman approached his car and opened fire, according to Illinois police and news reports.

The victim, identified in media reports as Morgan Park High School senior Treyvon Winfield, died in the April 15 shooting after being taken to a hospital, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Winfield was shot on the south side of the city around 8:10 p.m., police said. An accused male gunman fled after the shooting.

A motive for the shooting is unclear. The scene of the shooting is about a mile from Winfield’s high school.

Albert Winfield, the victim’s father, described his son as “a good person, a good child,” WGN reported.

“This senseless killing has got to stop,” he told reporters, according to WGN.

Pastor Donovan Price, who WMAQ reported is “an advocate in the area,” said the 19-year-old was excited for his upcoming prom and graduation, according to the station.

“Looking forward to all the things that young people should look forward to and now unfortunately, the family is out here crying and distressed,” he told WMAQ. “Hoping this is some kind of nightmare, but unfortunately, it’s real.”

The shooting remains under investigation, according to police.
