Man terrorizes doughnut shop over Pride Flag displayed outside, cops say. He’s charged
A man faces multiple charges after being accused of terrorizing a doughnut shop that displayed a Pride Flag in front of the business, New Jersey police said.
He also physically struggled with the business owner during the March 29 dispute, the Matawan Police Department said in a statement posted to Facebook.
The business owner told officers that a man with a T-shirt tied around his head “as a mask” tried to tear down a Pride Flag displayed in front of his shop and damaged the metal bracket, police said in the statement. The business owner tried to stop the man from damaging the flag, and they got into a physical encounter.
The man left before police arrived, but officers got a photo of his car’s license plate, the department said.
Officers were searching the area for the man, later identified as 61-year-old Maciej Wojciak, when he returned to the business to make “Nazi salute gestures” and simulate sex acts from the road, the department said. He also threatened to burn down the doughnut shop before taking off again, the department said.
Later on, Wojciak’s car was stopped, and he was taken into custody, the department said.
He was charged with bias intimidation, terroristic threats, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, the department said. Wojciak was processed at the department’s headquarters and taken to jail.
Officers ask anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Adam Hess at the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 800-533-7443 or police Detective Mason Sheehan at 732-290-2038.
Monmouth County is about a 55-mile drive south from New York City.
