A quick-thinking child in eastern Kentucky whose home was broken into shot and killed two armed burglars, according to police.

Kentucky State Police responded to a call about a shooting incident in Manchester around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, according to a Facebook post from State Trooper Scottie Pennington of Kentucky State Police. When officers arrived, they found Roger D. Smith, 44, and Jeffrey M. Allen, 51, shot.

The men broke in to steal firearms, according to authorities. The child, who was not identified, found them during their burglary attempt holding firearms, grabbed a handgun and shot them both before fleeing through a bedroom window, police said.

Smith was taken to the hospital by EMS but died of his wounds, while Allen was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy is pending.

Manchester is about a 100-mile drive southeast of Lexington.
