Dad with ‘generous spirit’ killed trying to stop robbery suspect, Oregon cops say
A 47-year-old man was fatally shot at an Oregon grocery store after he apparently saw a robbery and tried to stop the suspect, police said.
Jonathan Trent of Portland was taken to a hospital after the Jan. 13 shooting at a Fred Meyer store and later was pronounced dead, according to police and news reports.
Officers from the Portland Police Bureau “responded to reports of a robbery and shots fired outside” a business shortly before 4 p.m. and found Trent “down in the parking lot,” police said in a news release.
Police didn’t name the business, but KOIN and other news outlets reported it was a Fred Meyer.
Police are still investigating and asked anyone with information to reach out. They didn’t say whether they have a suspect in the shooting.
Trent was “a good human” with a son who’s 11, his brother said, according to KPTV.
Trent was involved in his son’s aquatic club, and he was “a man of warmth, kindness, and joy who brought light to everyone around him,” a club leader said in a GoFundMe fundraiser.
Trent inspired others “with his positivity and generous spirit” and “his loss has left a profound void in our hearts and in the lives of those who knew him,” the leader said.
