Three dogs surrounded a couple in their backyard and attacked them, leaving a 62-year-old woman with serious injuries that later killed her, Missouri police said.

The woman was “barely conscious and heavily bleeding” when officers arrived at the backyard around 11:45 p.m. on Jan. 15 as a 73-year-old man attempted to fend off the dogs, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said in a Jan. 16 news release.

The woman was rushed to a hospital where she died during surgery, according to police.

The man told police that he used a broom in an attempt to fend off the dogs, also fired gunshots to distract them, police said. He suffered injuries from dog bites, according to police.

Officers coaxed the dogs away from the yard by spraying pepper spray, the news release said.

They tracked the dogs to a neighboring home where the owner, a 54-year-old man, said the dogs lived, according to police.

The dogs were seized by animal control and police said the owner is cooperating with officers.

St. Louis police said the investigation is ongoing.
