A police officer making a traffic stop in the dark shot a 32-year-old man who wasn’t involved in the stop but approached with a weapon, Utah police said.

The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release.

Police didn’t say what kind of weapon the man had, why he approached the officer, or what led to the shooting.

The driver in the 1:40 a.m. traffic stop on Jan. 9 “is not considered a suspect” in the incident, police said. In fact, the driver “tried to help the officer with the armed man,” KSL reported, citing police.

In the release, Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said “this appears to have been yet again another rapidly unfolding, life-threatening, and dangerous situation.”

He added that, “our officers have my full support.”

The department has asked an outside agency to investigate the shooting, police said.
