Homeowner said he killed sword-wielding man, but he’s charged with murder, IN cops say
An Indiana man is facing charges after police say he fatally shot a man who approached his doorway.
Kevin L. Campbell, 68, of New Albany told police he heard a knock on his bedroom window at about 5 p.m. Oct. 26, and grabbed a small caliber rifle before looking out his door, according to an Indiana State Police news release.
Campbell told police he saw a man, later identified as 41-year-old Christopher Proctor, outside holding a sword, according to police.
The homeowner fired one shot, fatally hitting Proctor in the chest, authorities said.
Police said Campbell waited nearly two hours before calling to report “a deceased male in his yard.”
The Floyd County Coroner’s Office pronounced Proctor dead at the scene.
Campbell was initially arrested on a charge of obstruction of justice, a level 6 felony, according to police.
On Oct. 28, authorities announced additional charges against Campbell, including murder, manslaughter and criminal recklessness with a firearm after an investigation revealed Proctor was not carrying a sword and was unarmed.
Attorney information for Campbell was not available.
Campbell remains lodged at the Floyd County Jail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 28, court records show.
New Albany is about a 115-mile drive south from Indianapolis.
