Toddler gets ahold of gun and fatally shoots baby in parked car, Texas cops say
Police in Texas are investigating after they say a baby was killed inside a parked car when a toddler got ahold of a gun.
On Oct. 21, San Antonio police were called to a parking lot for reports of a shooting, according to a news conference streamed by KENS.
“What we have here today is a terrible, terrible tragedy,” San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said.
McManus said a woman was in the car with three children in the back of a parked car, a 2-year-old, 3-year-old and a baby who was 10 or 11 months old.
“In the very very rear of the vehicle there was a weapon. One of the two older children got ahold of that weapon, pulled the trigger and accidentally shot the 11-month or 10-month-old,” he said.
The baby died from their injuries, McManus said.
The car was parked in the parking lot of the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans’ Hospital, KENS reported. McManus said they were there for some sort of appointment, but did not specify who the appointment was for.
“We are deeply saddened by this event and offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of everyone affected. The South Texas Veterans Health Care System takes the safety of its Veterans and staff seriously and appreciate the quick response and support from local law enforcement, as well as our VA Police,” a statement from the South Texas Veterans Health Care System said, according to the news outlet.
It is not clear who owned the gun or the relationship between the children and the woman in the car. As of now no charges have been filed.
