Man lies about ‘kidnapped’ teen after truck is stolen, prompting Amber Alert, CO cops say
A man lied about a “kidnapped” teenager in Colorado after his truck was stolen, police say.
The man, 34-year-old Daniel Reyes, called the Pueblo Police Department to report a kidnapping and car theft from the Sunset Bowling alley around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, the agency said on Facebook.
When officers arrived, Reyes told them his 13-year-old cousin “Sandra” was inside his white F-520 when it was stolen, the department said.
“The investigation quickly escalated and involved multiple jurisdictions and agencies” and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued an AMBER alert, officials said.
When officials found the truck in Pueblo, it was unoccupied with no sign of ”Sandra.”
Then, about four hours into the investigation and search for the teen, someone called in information about her — and “detectives discovered the reported kidnapped girl had no relation to Daniel, and she was safe at home,” officials said.
Investigators brought Reyes in to question him about the false kidnapping report and arrested him on charges of attempting to influence a public servant, a class 4 felony, the department said.
People hoped Reyes wouldn’t get off too easily in the comments.
“Hold them accountable,” someone said. “Not a slap on the hand.”
Several people shared they had been worried about the girl ever since they received the AMBER alert on their phones.
“Wow, what a revelation,” another person said. “Absolutely sick. Real people were extremely worried for that little girl and to find out he LIED is insane!”
