A woman died after she was hit by a 14-year-old driver in a Walmart parking lot, Iowa police said.

Independence police said 27-year-old Leann Dumire of Jesup was hit by a vehicle and pinned against the side of a Walmart building at about 4 p.m. Oct. 8, KCRG reported.

She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, KGAN reported.

Police said the driver was a 14-year-old with a valid learner’s permit, and an adult relative with a driver’s license was also in the car, KWWL reported.

Dumire was an employee at the Independence Walmart where the accident occurred, according to her obituary.

“She enjoyed smiling, making others laugh, and always gave the best hugs,” Dumire’s obituary says.

Police said an investigation into the accident is ongoing, KCRG reported.

Iowa teens can get an instruction permit at 14 after passing written and vision tests.
