Couple’s visit to group home for ‘at risk’ men ends with dad fatally shot, TN cops say
A family visit to a reentry program for young men with troubled pasts turned fatal when the dad was fatally shot by one of the tenants, according to investigators in Tennessee.
The suspect, 19-year-old Malik Turrentine, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
He is accused of killing 44-year-old Michael Harvell on the campus of 4:13 Strong, a residential program for “at risk” men. Participants are men ages 18 to 30 “who have previous experiences in incarceration, homelessness, or severe underemployment,” Guidestar.org reports.
The shooting happened Sunday, Oct. 6, after Harvell and his wife met with staff over concerns about their son’s welfare on campus.
“The investigation shows that there was a fight among residents on Saturday, during which Harvell’s stepson was allegedly assaulted. Harvell and his wife took their son away from the property on Saturday and returned Sunday night for a meeting with program staff and residents,” police said.
“While there, another altercation apparently occurred among residents. Turrentine emerged outside of a building, was confronted, and fatally shot Harvell,” authorities said.
Details of why the two men were at odds were not released.
Turrentine is on probation after an arrest in February on drug and gun charges, officials said. “He was reportedly in the 4:13 Strong program by court order,” police said.
The nonprofit’s program takes six to eight months to complete and intends “to break the cycle of poverty, crime and dependency by providing faith-based educational, vocational, and life skills training,” Guidestar.com reports. Participants live on the campus, the site says.
