Striking worker killed when accused drunk driver crashes into picketers, MI cops say
A striking worker was killed when a man accused of racing his truck while drunk lost control and crashed into a picket line, Michigan officials said.
One “young man” is dead, and three people are in critical condition after a driver racing another truck “lost control and crashed” into the area where Eaton Aerospace members were protesting on the night of Sept. 28, according to a statement from Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney.
“My heart aches for all of you,” Mahoney said.
Police said the vehicle left the roadway, then crashed into the group, WILX reported.
The striking worker killed was identified as 24-year-old Seth Webb of Jackson, according to WLNS and the man’s family.
Webb died from his injuries at a local hospital, the outlet reported.
“I’ve spent the last 10 years having the privilege of calling you my friend, but you were more of my brother,” Ethan Lauth said in a Facebook tribute to Webb. “I wouldn’t be where I am in life of it wasn’t for you.”
Jayden Michael Chase, 23, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated causing death, according to an activity log from the Jackson Police Department and WLNS.
Chase was arraigned Sept. 30, and his bond was set at $25,000, according to WILX.
The picketers were members of the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America Union, Local 475.
UAW 475 Eaton Aerospace Strike
Since Sept. 16, hundreds of UAW members have walked out on strike at the Eaton Aerospace plant in Jackson, according to a UAW news release.
Workers are seeking a new retirement system, as well as “quality health care, include wages that reflect workers’ contributions to the company’s growing profits, and establish fair processes for scheduling and promotions.”
Jackson is about a 35-mile drive west of Ann Arbor.
