A rideshare driver died after being caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between his passenger and two other suspects, Texas police said.

Officers responded shortly after midnight Aug. 26 to reports of a shooting where they found a victim in the driver’s seat of a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the back, according to a report from the San Antonio Police Department.

Authorities learned the victim was a 62-year-old rideshare driver who had just arrived to pick up a passenger when two people began shooting at them, police said. Authorities did not specify which rideshare company the driver worked for.

The rideshare passenger fired back, and during the exchange of gunfire, the driver was hit, according to police.

The passenger and the suspects fled the scene before authorities arrived, police said.

The driver was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, according to police.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner identified the driver as Robert “Bobby” Renteria, KABB reported.

Local athletes and teams remember Renteria as a skilled and dedicated softball umpire.

In a Facebook tribute, the San Antonio Division of the Athletics Mercado Academy called Renteria “one of the very few umpires in our community who was considered a great ambassador of the game.”

“Bobby Renteria kept the game fun for our girls, took some time to explain some teachable moments to our girls during the game,” the group said. “Bobby was a great human being with a huge heart.”

San Antonio police said the investigation is ongoing.
