Climber vanished after leaving friend to reach Montana peak. Now, his body is found
A 32-year-old climber’s body has been discovered a week after he left a friend to summit a mountain peak alone in Montana, officials and friends said.
Grant Marcuccio’s body was found at about 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, one-third of a mile east of McPartland Peak, Glacier National Park said in a news release.
Marcuccio was spotted by a helicopter “below the ridgeline between Heavens Peak and McPartland Peak,” park officials said.
His body was recovered and given to the medical examiner’s office. A cause of death has not been determined, but his injuries appear to be related to a fall, officials said.
On Aug. 18, he had reached the summit of Heavens Peak with a friend, his friend Amy Boring wrote on Facebook.
“Being the mountain goat that he is, went on to summit McPartland solo,” Boring wrote.
The man from Whitefish was last seen trekking from Heavens Peak to McPartland Mountain, McClatchy News reported.
“Grant was such a cool guy. He was a free-thinker, a truly authentic individual. Always warm and generous with his beautiful smile, always willing to offer kindness & help,” Kamille Pennington Crowley wrote on Facebook.
“He has tons of people that love him, and he will be missed,” Pennington Crowley said.
McPartland Mountain is an 8,413-foot-tall mountain in northwestern Montana, according to Peakbagger.com.
