Mushroom hunter finds human skull in forest, CO officials say. Then more bones found
A man hunting for mushrooms in a Colorado forest stumbled upon a human skull, officials said. But whom the remains belong to is a mystery.
He notified law enforcement of the gruesome discovery, which he found in a heavily forested area between U.S. Highway 40 and Mary Jane Road in Winter Park on Saturday, Aug. 17, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said in a news release.
Local law enforcement, as well as the U.S. Forest Service and Colorado Bureau of Investigation, found the skull — “as well as several other bones” in the immediate area, officials said.
Search and rescue personnel combed through a wider area for more remains but didn’t find anything, including clothing or other identifying information, officials said.
The bones seem to have been there for a long time, potentially many years, officials said.
The bones will go to a forensic anthropologist, who will try to determine the sex, race and general age of the person, as well as when they may have died, officials said.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is also seeking help identifying the remains, officials said.
Anyone with information should call the general CBI tip line at 720-295-6642 and specify that they’re calling about the human remains case. Callers can remain anonymous, officials said.
Winter Park is located about a 65-mile drive northwest of Denver.
