A man attempted to BASE jump from a viewpoint at the Grand Canyon National Park and died, officials said.

His body was found 500 feet below the rim, the national park said in a news release.

The park visitor, who hasn’t been identified, jumped at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, from the Yavapai Point, a viewpoint into the canyon, rangers said.

His body was recovered from the canyon the next day and taken by a helicopter to the medical examiner’s office.

Officials are investigating the incident.

BASE jumping is prohibited in “all areas” of the national park.

Another person died at the Grand Canyon the day before.

A 20-year-old college student was close to the edge when he accidentally fell 400 feet into the canyon and died, McClatchy News reported.

In 2023, over 4.7 million people visited the Grand Canyon National Park.
