Three-legged dog ‘trying to cope’ after his return to SC shelter. He needs a home
A three-legged dog was adopted — then returned to a South Carolina shelter.
Now, nearly one year later, Vinny the pup is “trying to cope” as he continues to wait for a home.
“Vinny is sweet and playful, absolutely loves treats,” the Spartanburg Humane Society wrote July 7 on Facebook. “He (doesn’t) let having 3 legs stop him from much. He loves going for walks and running and playing.”
Vinny first landed at the shelter in August 2021, when he arrived badly hurt due to a broken hind leg that hadn’t healed properly.
“We were hoping the injury would heal and the leg would return to full use but it just did not work out that way,” Angel Cox, CEO of the humane society, told McClatchy News in an email. “Our vet made the decision to amputate his leg in October of 2021 after multiple rounds of antibiotics and pain meds and splinting the leg to help it heal had failed.”
Vinny was adopted but then returned to the shelter about a year ago, the shelter wrote on social media and in an online adoption profile.
“He came back last August because his owner was going through some homing situations,” the animal organization said. “Since being back Vinny is trying to cope. He definitely would (prefer) to be anywhere else but back.”
Now, the mixed-breed dog needs a quiet home where he can trust people and be pampered. The shelter believes Vinny is being overlooked because he doesn’t get along with other dogs.
“In the world of a humane society, most people who visit to possibly adopt already have dogs,” Cox wrote. “So that is what is hurting him in the prospect of finding a home. We feel certain the right home will come along…one with understanding parents without other pets or a desire to go to dog parks etc.”
Vinny, described as a 3-year-old pup with “lots of living and loving to do,” was still in need of a home as of July 9. More details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at spartanburghumane.org.
“We just have no idea what all this precious dog has endured,” Cox wrote. “We have tried and will keep trying to integrate him with other dogs, but so far his only way into a play yard with other dogs requires a muzzle.”
