A lottery player has her mother to thank for leading her to a big win in Maryland.

Two siblings got into playing the lottery because of their mom, and one ended up hitting a $50,000 prize playing their mom’s numbers, the Maryland Lottery said in a June 7 news release.

“I’m a regular scratcher,” the woman told lottery officials.

The siblings have a “nighttime ritual” in which the brother calls his sister to ask about her recent lottery results, the siblings said when they went together to claim her prize.

When he called her one night, she realized she won big in the Pick 5 drawing on June 4 using her mom’s combination of 11655, lottery officials said. She beat 1-in-100,000 odds to win a top prize with a straight bet.

The brother said he’s also had some success playing Pick 3 and Pick 4, mostly in the range of prizes worth $500 to $2,500.

But this $50,000 prize isn’t his sister’s first big win.

She won $40,000 on a scratch-off ticket in 2009 and gave some of the money to her brother for Christmas, the siblings said.

The woman told lottery officials she plans to use some of the money for home improvement projects.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
