‘Sweet’ dog found in bad shape spent 200 days waiting for home. Then man fell in love
A “sweet” dog with a rough past spent more than 200 days in a shelter — then, a man fell for him.
“It was almost love at first sight,” the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Northeastern North Carolina wrote on Facebook. “We are so excited for Comet and his new adventures with his new owner.”
The SPCA shared the good news May 15, months after Comet was rescued from neglect. He and other hound dogs were found with skin problems and started their journey toward gaining weight, according to social media posts.
The group made it to safety in October but went up for adoption around Christmastime. That may explain why Comet and the other pups — Blitzen, Cupid, Dancer, Dasher, Donner, Prancer and Vixen — bear names of characters in “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
As of April, Comet and several of the other “sweet” dogs still needed homes, making them the shelter’s longest residents. Kaitlyn Carey, assistant manager for the SPCA, told McClatchy News in a phone interview that it can be tougher for hounds to get adopted due to their reputation for having high energy.
But recently, Comet’s luck took a turn. A shelter visitor came to see another dog and decided “it wasn’t the perfect fit.” He started looking around and stumbled upon Comet’s kennel, kicking off their next chapter together.
“We were all super stoked,” Carey said. “We’re just glad that he’s getting a home.”
Now, Comet is expected to spend time at his new owner’s bike shop. He was adopted days after another “reindeer” pup got a second chance. Cupid — who spent 198 days in the shelter after arriving with missing hair — was “glowing” when she went to her new home, McClatchy News reported.
The SPCA is in Elizabeth City, a roughly 165-mile drive northeast from Raleigh.
