A man is accused of killing his girlfriend while she was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, California deputies say.

The 35-year-old Covelo woman called 911 shortly before 5:30 a.m. March 12, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said in a March 20 news release.

She told the dispatcher she was the target of “domestic violence at the hands of her boyfriend, Johnathan Lee Draughan,” 43, according to deputies.

The woman also said Draughan was inside the home, armed with a gun, deputies said.

As the woman was on the phone, the dispatcher heard gunshots, according to deputies. The woman fell silent.

Shortly after, deputies said Draughan spoke to the dispatcher over the phone, telling them “he had shot his girlfriend, and he would await the arrival of deputies.”

Fire officials declared the woman dead on scene, deputies said.

The couple’s 2-year-old child, who was home, was taken to a “hospital for injuries unrelated to the shooting,” according to deputies.

Draughan was booked into jail on a homicide charge, deputies said. He is being held on $600,000 bail, according to online jail records.

Covelo is about a 200-mile drive northwest from Sacramento.
