Uber driver runs over, kills toddler and is attacked by girl’s family, Texas cops say
A toddler died after being run over by a rideshare driver outside an apartment complex in Texas, authorities say.
The Uber driver had dropped off five passengers, including a 1-year-old-girl, just before 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, in north Harris County, authorities told KHOU.
The driver, unaware the toddler had moved in front of the vehicle upon exiting the car, began driving forward, striking the toddler, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
“I just heard a lot of commotion outside, and I just came outside, and I just seen, like, blood and a baby laying on the ground,” Simya Washington, a neighbor, told KPRC.
Gonzalez said the child was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The girl, who has not been identified, was a few months away from turning 2 years old.
After the accident, family members pulled the driver out of his vehicle and began assaulting him, according to the sheriff. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Charges have not been filed against the driver or accused attackers, authorities told KPRC and KHOU, noting the incident remains under investigation.
