Cyclist riding 67 miles to celebrate 67th birthday killed in crash, NC officials say
A cyclist riding 67 miles to celebrate his 67th birthday was killed in a crash in North Carolina, loved ones said.
Bruce Alan Davis was known for being active, often running and doing CrossFit workouts. But police said his life was cut short after a bike ride on Sunday, Oct. 22, the day he turned 67 years old.
The Matthews Police Department said Davis was on his bike when he was involved in a collision with a vehicle. He was rushed to a hospital but died from crash-related injuries, officers wrote in an Oct. 23 news release.
The crash was reported on Matthews Township Parkway, about 10 miles southeast of uptown Charlotte. Police in their release shared few other details about the ongoing investigation but said no one had been charged.
Deanna O’Connor, a friend of Davis’, told WSOC he had been “cycling 67 miles for his 67th birthday.” He was remembered as a friendly person and a skilled athlete, according to the TV station and tributes posted to social media.
“Bruce was an uplifting spirited man and made Matthews Run Club a better place to run,” Facebook user John Carriker wrote. “Bruce was regular attendee with us at Run Club. He was always smiling and encouraging runners.”
The Matthews Police Department didn’t share additional information with McClatchy News, and Davis’ friends didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on Oct. 25.
