A dog found bleeding with a bullet in his chest is on the mend at a Las Vegas foundation, officials say.

Clark County Animal Protection Services officers found the dog, now named Dawson, bleeding from the head at an apartment complex, The Animal Foundation said in a news release.

Veterinarians found a gunshot wound in Dawson’s ear and removed a bullet from his chest, officials said.

“Even though Dawson has a long road ahead of him, he is a sweet, wiggly boy who loves belly rubs,” officials said.

Animal control officers are investigating Dawson’s shooting, the foundation said. He appeared to have been shot with a handgun a few days before he was found.

The foundation also is seeking donations to pay for Dawson’s medical care and other expenses.
