Man cooling off in river vanishes from girlfriend’s sight, CA cops say. Body now found
A man was found dead after wading in a California river to cool off from the “sweltering heat,” according to a sheriff’s office.
Jorge Medina, 47, was wading in the Russian River near Potter Valley on Saturday, July 22, where the high was 103 degrees Farenheight, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said in a July 24 news release.
Deputies said Medina was “wading in chest-deep water” when his girlfriend and their daughters lost sight of him.
Shortly after, Medina, who had been “complaining of a bad headache,” was found face-down in the river, the sheriff’s office said.
Medina was pulled to shore, and a bystander started performing CPR, according to deputies.
While searching for Medina, deputies said bystanders flagged them down, and they swam across the river.
Deputies said they took over CPR until paramedics arrived and tried “lifesaving measures” on Medina before pronouncing him dead on scene.
Potter Valley is about 140 miles northwest of Sacramento.
