A man killed himself after accidentally shooting his wife while cleaning his gun, Illinois police say.

Officers found the two gunshot victims at a home in Bolingbrook on Saturday, July 15, police said in a news release.

A preliminary investigation revealed Simeon Hendrickson, 61, was cleaning one of his firearms when it accidentally went off, striking his wife, 60-year-old Laurie Hendrickson, according to police.

Simeon Hendrickson, police said, then purposefully shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His wife died at a hospital, according to police.

Officers said the shooting “is not a random act and there is no danger to the public.”

Bolingbrook is about 30 miles southwest of Chicago.
