A motorcyclist was found dead on a highway exit ramp after he sped away from a traffic stop and escaped a police chase, Georgia cops said.

State troopers stopped the motorcyclist just after 4 p.m. on June 24 after they said they saw him going 100 mph in a 70-mph zone on Interstate 75 in Cobb County, according to Georgia State Patrol.

As troopers approached the motorcycle, he sped off down I-75, an interstate that runs the length of Georgia.

The motorcyclist was swerving “in and out of traffic” and driving in the emergency lane at an “extremely high rate of speed,” police said in a statement.

Troopers followed him, and one struck a metal object in the left shoulder, causing one of the vehicle’s rear tires to become disabled, the statement says. The trooper lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail and then another car traveling southbound, according to police. Both vehicles went off the right side of the highway before coming to a stop.

Neither the trooper nor the driver of the other car was injured, according to police.

Other troopers continued to chase the motorcyclist but eventually lost sight of him and stopped the pursuit, the statement says.

As one of the troopers took an exit onto a local road, he found the motorcyclist crashed on the exit ramp after striking a vehicle in the shoulder, the statement says. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not release his identity.

Cobb County is in north-central Georgia. Its county seat is Marietta.
