Hikers stumble across body on mountain where actor vanished, California officials say

Hikers discovered human remains on Mount Baldy, a rugged Southern California mountain where actor Julian Sands vanished on a hike in January, authorities reported.

The body, reported at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 24, has not been identified, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Deputies took the remains to the county coroner’s office, the release said. Identification should be completed sometime this week.

Sands, 65, was reported missing Jan. 13 after not returning from a hike on the snow-covered mountain near Los Angeles, McClatchy News reported.

The actor, an avid hiker, appeared in several Oscar-nominated films, including “A Room with a View.”

The sheriff’s office said June 17 that the search for him was ongoing in a “limited capacity.”

Mount Baldy is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, about 45 miles northeast of Los Angeles, according to Condé Nast Traveler.
