A man was shot dead by deputies when he lunged at a woman during a bloody knife attack, Georgia authorities say.

It happened April 23 as Douglas County deputies responded to a “domestic dispute” at a home in Lithia Springs, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

They arrived to find a woman “covered in blood” trying to run from a man holding a knife, investigators said in a news release. Deputies ordered the man, 39, to drop the weapon but he refused.

He “then charged at the woman and toward deputies while holding the knife,” the GBI said.

One of the deputies opened fire, killing the man identified as Robernard Benjamin.

The woman was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital with “multiple stab wounds,” according to the release. Her condition wasn’t known as of April 25.

Lithia Springs is about 20 miles west of downtown Atlanta.
