An 8-year-old died after falling from a slide at his Utah elementary school, media reports say.

The third-grader was hospitalized after falling from a twisty slide at Rose Springs Elementary School on Monday, Feb. 6, the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office told KSL Newsradio.

After the fall, recess monitors found the boy unconscious and not breathing, KSL-TV reported. He was given CPR before being taken to a hospital.

When reached for comment by McClatchy News on Wednesday, Feb. 8, the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office asked all questions be directed to the Tooele County School District.

In an email to McClatchy News, Brett Valdez, communications director for the district, confirmed the boy had died.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the student’s passing following the accident on the playground at Rose Springs Elementary,” Valdez said. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends during this difficult time.”

The boy is described as a “sweet exuberant soul” in a GoFundMe set up for the family.

“He leaves behind a big hole in our hearts,” the GoFundMe says. “He was a rambunctious little 8-year-old boy who loved video games, star wars, acting in his sisters’ home movies and board games. He made friends with everyone he met.”

Rose Springs Elementary School is in Erda, about 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.
