Human remains found after second deadly house fire in NC county in 2 days, cops say

A missing person’s remains were found, marking the second deadly house fire reported in the same North Carolina county in two days.

An arson investigation is underway after firefighters were called at about 1 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22. While at a home on Fields Road in Fayetteville, crews put out a blaze and took two people to a hospital, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders then started an “extensive search” for a third person who had been inside the house, officials said. Human remains were later found.

A photo that deputies shared on Facebook shows the house was destroyed, with charred floors and collapsed walls.

“While the investigation is still ongoing, there appears to be nothing suspicious about the origin of the fire,” deputies wrote in the post.

Deputies started investigating whether the fire was intentionally set about 24 hours after firefighters were called to another burning home near Fayetteville.

At about 2:45 a.m. on Dec. 21, deputies responded to a house that had caught fire in the Linden area, McClatchy News reported.

“At the time of the fire, the home was occupied by a family of four,” the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a news release. “All of them were transported to a local hospital.”

Three family members were in critical condition. The fourth — a young child — later died, officials said.

Deputies ask anyone with information to call them at 910-321-6786 or 910-677-5499. People are also urged to contact Crimestoppers at 910-483-8477, use the P3 Tips smartphone application or visit fay-nccrimestoppers.org.

Fayetteville is roughly 60 miles south of Raleigh.
