Mom locks herself and kids in bedroom, shoots intruder through door, Texas cops say

A mother hid with her children in a locked bedroom as a man broke into her home through the garage, according to authorities in Texas.

The intruder then tried to get into the bedroom where they were hiding, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said in an Oct. 26 news release.

She warned him that she had called 911 and had a gun, but he “refused to leave and continued to try to get into the bedroom,” the news release says.

The mom shot at him through the door one time, and the man ran away, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies got to her house in rural Edinburg at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. With help from the Texas Department of Public Safety air support, authorities found the suspect in a field about 100 yards away from the home.

The man, identified as 36-year-old Carlos David Garcia, had one gunshot wound to his left arm, according to the sheriff’s office.

Once medically cleared, he was booked into jail on a charge of “burglary of habitation with intent.”

An investigation is ongoing.

Edinburg is part of the Rio Grande Valley region in South Texas, near the Mexico border.
