Teen dies after running red light in crash that left 7 others injured, CA cops say
A teen driver died after running a red light in a crash that left seven others injured, California authorities said.
The 17-year-old was driving a Lexus sedan north down Moreno Beach Drive in Moreno Valley and continued through the red light at the intersection with Cactus Avenue on Sunday, Oct. 2, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
The teen’s car hit a Honda minivan driving east on Cactus Avenue, the release said.
The collision caused the teen’s car to strike “a metal traffic signal pole,” the sheriff’s department said.
“It is unknown at this time if drugs and/or alcohol are a factor in this collision,” according to the sheriff’s department.
The teen driver died on scene, deputies said, and the “female juvenile passenger” in the car with him was taken to the hospital for “major traumatic injuries.”
The minivan’s 59-year-old driver and five passengers were taken to the hospital for minor injuries, the sheriff’s department said.
Deputies said they will release the identities of those involved after “further investigation and notification of next of kin.”
Moreno Valley is about 95 miles northeast of San Diego.
