A passenger was killed in a single-vehicle crash along Fort Hamer Road early Friday morning, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The fatal crash, which happened at the Fort Hamer Boat Launch, saw the 18-year-old driver lose control of his sedan while attempting to make a left turn, causing the vehicle to end up in the Manatee River.

The driver was able to exit his car and swim to shore, however, the 18-year-old passenger remained in the vehicle, where he was pronounced dead.

The sedan had been traveling south approaching the parking lot of 1605 Fort Hamer Road before the accident occurred.

Both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation by FHP.
