27-year-old man from Bradenton escapes after truck catches fire on Skyway Bridge, FHP says
A 27-year-old man from Bradenton escaped his burning Dodge Ram pickup truck after it caught fire while driving over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Monday evening, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a press release.
The man was traveling south on the Skyway Bridge in the inside lane when his pickup started to have mechanical problems.
The driveshaft of the vehicle had broken off and caught fire.
According to FHP, the man stopped and got out of the pickup truck, but it still managed to roll backward and hit a semi-truck that was traveling behind it.
The 27-year-old suffered minor injuries, while the 34-year-old semi-truck driver from Miami was unharmed, the release said.
The crash had shut down all southbound lanes of the Skyway, but by 6:11 p.m. Monday night, the outside lanes had reopened.
